Day #319 – Letchmore Loop Finale

Trad: 8
Walked: 7.4 miles

Back on 1st May, when I reached The Big 5K, I had found the Letchmore Loop Bonus cache and a few more. But there were still some outstanding from the south eastern part of the loop, so today I decided to tackle them after work.

There were some easy finds and a couple of tricky ones, mainly along footpaths through the fields around Letchmore. One particularly nice stretch was through an orchard.

I gave up at No. 5 which was a very tricky beast, but managed to find all the others I tackled this evening. The final stretch back towards the car was easy enough walking – I was grateful, since the previous field was very uneven and rutted and I was terrified of twisting an ankle as I picked my way slowly across it!

There is always time for one or two more, so after my main walk, I drove back through Radlett on the way to the M25 and picked up Coal Post #42 and another nearby trad.

Time to head home!

Day #299 – Three Counties’ Churche Micros

Trad: 1 Multi: 2 Puzzle: 1 Challenge: 4
Walked: 7.3 miles

Today I drove down to Deal to visit my semi-muggle friend Julian for the weekend (he likes walking/finding caches with me but never bothers logging them online). I didn’t go via the most direct route, but wound my way via several locations to pick up specific caches which have been on my list for a while.

I had also set myself a little challenge (OK, to qualify for a Challenge) to find Church Micros in three different counties in a day. The first stop was Childerditch (Essex) which was (sort of) on my way to the M25. The farmer had kindly made it very clear where the path went!

Next up was a trip to the London Borough of Bromley to pick up a couple of Challenge caches – one of which was down this rather overgrown pathway – the folks who manage it could take a leaf out of the Essex Farmer’s book here!

I also picked up the CMs at Green Street Green and Chelsfield, both within London (although Chelsfield is listed as being in Kent on the website).

As I wasn’t sure if this would count for my Kent contribution, I also stopped off in Southborough later on, where I found CM129 (definitely in Kent!) and one of Mole’s Gridlocked Challenges in the woods nearby – where I found this cool bivouac close to the cache.

Challenge completed, and playtime over, I headed off to Deal!

Day #178 – Licence To Take It Easy

Trad: 1
Walked: 1.0  miles

In the last five days, despite it being January, I’ve cached in Kent (twice), Berkshire, Oxfordshire (twice), Bucks, Milton Keynes and Herts; found 131 caches and walked a little over 46 miles. So today I thought I had earned a rest and would find something much closer to home to maintain my geostreak!

The new hide in Galleywood, Licence To Ride by The Avenue Two fitted the bill nicely. It was a quick find and I was able to tick off a cache for the geostreak then get home to get on with the things I should have been doing over the past five days!

Day #173 – Cool Cuban Spirit

Trad: 1 Puzzle: 62
Walked: 12.4 miles

I’ve had my eye on the Cool Cuban Spirit circuit in Kent by jazzyjessups for a while. I think I solved all 60 main puzzles well before Christmas, but haven’t had the time to come and pick them up yet. And a couple of days ago at the Essex Meet, I mentioned the series to Kitty!! and Mr Crow who were very eager to join me on my proposed attack on the caches today.

Kitty!! spent most of yesterday solving the puzzles and after a few late night emails we finally had a set of co-ords we both agreed on. Having met at Kitty’s house, we travelled to Kent in one car, parked up and set off along the track.

To begin with, the going was pretty good – the ground was still frozen in many places and we made good time on the first section. The route was mainly micros, but occasionally we were rewarded with a bigger box.

We met a few furry four-legged friends along the way – this was the cutest (and shortest!).

We had each brought a packed lunch, and just after finding Number 31, we stopped and had a bite to eat in the woods.

I was very glad of my silly woollen hat at times – it was very sunny all day but perishing cold!

It was a great series to do, with only 1 cache which needed replacing (which we did with the CO’s blesssing, meaning we had no DNF’s – hurrah!).

After 61 puzzles and a trad Church Micro thrown in along the way, we were really pleased to finally reach cache #63 for the day – the bonus cache! That makes my best day’s caching so far, and it was great fun to have company for the route.

Day #26 – Rockin’ With Rod

Trad: 1
Walked: 4.9 miles

I had seen this cache on my geomap for months, and decided to ignore it because I thought it was about Rod Stewart – and I’m not keen on him!

Now that I’m really getting into my geostreak, I have been looking again at the map and revisiting some puzzles and other caches which I have been blanking up to now. And to my surprise, when I really read the cache page properly, and followed the audio link – no Rod Stewart in sight! Hurrah!

With a bit of help from Shazam, I soon had the necessary sorted out and paid a visit this evening – voilà! There it was.

Afterwards I did some more path surveying for The Big Pathwatch around the area. The sunset threw some lovely long shadows:

I was surveying some footpaths around the outskirts of Broomfield for The Big Pathwatch this evening and decided to go and hunt for a couple of caches which were outstanding in the area.

BB17 Broomfield Bimble had been published after I had completed the rest of the series ages ago. Little Critters – Fireflies was one I had DNF’d many months back and thought I would have another stab at. Two more green boxes converted to smileys on the map. Job done!

Day #20 – The Essex Way: 133-159

I decided to tackle another stretch of The Essex Way today – this time based on a figure-of-8 loop around Pleshey, a little village to the north west of Chelmsford.

I also picked up some other caches along the route, part of the Pleshey Ring series.

It was getting dark by the time I returned to the car, but the scenery on the walk was lovely and I didn’t mind getting back late – I much prefer afternoon and evening walking during the summer when it’s a bit cooler.
