This afternoon I decided to tackle the Essex: West Wickford Walk, a set of 11 traditional caches of varying sizes and difficulties. I knew there was a possibility of one not being available, but in the end had only 2 DNF’s out of the lot – not bad, considering some were really tricky hides. The setter,  EjBrandon, seems intent on torturing us with caches placed in spiky locations. Ouch!  Ouch!  Ouch!

I was particularly pleased to locate #3 which had mysteriously moved from its safe hidey hole in the base of a tree to be 5ft away at the bottom of a ditch! As the ditch was again surrounded by prickly things, I couldn’t get down to reach it directly, but managed to effect a rescue by poking it back up with my walking pole until I could reach it. Phew!

Hide #6 was also a beast, but I got there in the end (through a very prickly bush). It was rusted up, however, so I couldn’t sign it.

The main target of the walk was #10. which is listed as a large cache. I need 10 large finds for a challenge cache I’m working on, GC4ZHT2 – A Gigantic Challenge, and so far, I only had 8. So that’s just one more I need to get – I had a suitable candidate on my GPS near Hockley, but ran out of time to pick it up today. There’s always tomorrow!

Mind you, given that the Gigantic Challenge cache is near Stirling, there’s no particular hurry to have the qualifying caches found quickly – I’ve no idea when I will next be north of the border!
